Decriminalize Nature of San Luis Obispo, CA Welcomes You!

The Decriminalize Nature initiative in San Luis Obispo is a community-led effort working to restore our relationship with nature and advocate for the decriminalization of entheogenic plants and fungi. As part of the SLO Psychedelic Society, our Decrim Nature team hosts monthly gatherings focused on education, community dialogue, and civic engagement.

Our mission is to support a future where natural entheogenic plants and fungi are treated with respect rather than criminalization. For centuries, cultures around the world have worked with these natural organisms for healing, spiritual connection, and personal growth. Today, a growing body of research and lived experience suggests they may also play a meaningful role in improving mental health, well-being, and our connection to the natural world.

Through community education and thoughtful advocacy, our goal is to present a local resolution to the San Luis Obispo City Council that would make the enforcement of laws against entheogenic plants and fungi among the city’s lowest priorities.

At its heart, this movement is about restoring our root connection to nature, supporting human health and well-being, and creating compassionate policies grounded in science, tradition, and community values.

OUR MISSION

Improve human health and well-being by decriminalizing and expanding access to entheogenic plants and fungi through political and community organizing, education and advocacy in the San Luis Obispo, CA area.

OUR VISION

We envision happier, healthier individuals and communities reconnected to nature and entheogenic plant and fungi traditions and practices.

OUR PURPOSE

To decriminalize entheogenic plants, restore our root connection to nature, and improve human health and well-being.

Why Decriminalize Entheogenic Plants?

The government has no legitimate authority to restrict access to plants and fungi. These natural substances were criminalized under the Nixon administration based on politics, not science. While some organizations seek approval through federal agencies like the DEA and FDA, Decriminalize Nature believes growing, gathering, and gifting entheogens is a basic human right.

Decriminalizing these sacred plants and fungi allows communities to reconnect with their ancient uses, free from government and corporate control. People should have the freedom to heal, pursue personal and spiritual growth, and explore consciousness on their own terms. Criminalization has caused stigma, job loss, and incarceration—we aim to end that.

There are 4 main types of entheogenic plants and fungi, each with their own benefits and properties.

MUSHROOMS

(PSILOCYBIN & PSILOCIN)

AYAHUASCA

(DMT/MAOI)

CACTI

(MESCALINE)

IBOGA

(IBOGAINE)
